Where the Wild Things Are

Sendak,M. ( 1963). Where the Wild Things Are. New York, NY: Harper Collins.

Max is creating mischief, so his mother sends him to bed without his supper.   While he is in his room, a forest grows, a boat and ocean appear, and he sails off for lands unknown. He lands at a place where the wild things are.  While there, he meets creatures and monsters with terrible roars and terrible teeth. Max tames them with a magic trick, and he becomes the king of the wild things. They have a wild rumpus as he rules over the wild things.  Max soon discovers he is lonely and misses those that love him.  He hops into his boat and sails back home.  When he arrives, he discovers his hot supper still waiting for him in his room.

This Caldecott Medal winner by Maurice Sendak is one of the best known children's books.  Children can identify with the wild imagination Max possesses. They can also sympathize with Max's need to be where he is loved most. It teaches a simple lesson that no matter how naughty you may be, you will always be loved by your mother.   This popular book was also made into a movie in 2009.
